The state’s first accredited school of social work is celebrating 90 years this week.
ATLANTA (AP) — The state’s first accredited school of social work is celebrating 90 years this week. Clark Atlanta University’s Whitney M. Young Jr. School of Social Work was also the first at a historically black college to be accredited. Today, the school has more than 250 students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The school was named for the Kentucky native and legendary civil rights activist on its 80th anniversary. Young accepted the position as dean of the school in 1954 and served until he became director of the National Urban League in 1961. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed was among the dignitaries marking the milestone this week. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
