PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia’s mayor has signed an ordinance banning employers from asking about a person’s criminal history on job applications.
Mayor Michael Nutter says the legislation, which applies to city agencies and private employers, makes it easier for ex-offenders to be considered for a job and at least get a foot in the door. It says that employers can still perform a background check after an initial interview with the prospective employee.
Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was on hand when Nutter signed the bill Monday. He says it will give formerly incarcerated people a second chance.
Chicago, Boston and several other cities have adopted similar measures.
Some business groups, including the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, oppose the law.
