PEORIA, Ill. — Local leaders say they’re closing in on the $40 million they need to build the new Peoria Riverfront Museum.

Methodist Medical Center Chief Executive Office Michael Bryant says fundraisers have almost $33 million in hand. He’s optimistic all of the money will be raised by summer.

The planned downtown museum would include exhibits on local history, art and culture and an IMAX theater. It would incorporate the city’s Lakeview Museum and planetarium.

The museum is planned for a site along the Illinois River. Planners initially said it would be built this year.
