Pair of classics do it big at Arie Crown

R&B superstar Charlie “Uncle Charlie” Wilson

R&B superstar Charlie “Uncle Charlie” Wilson, left, shared the night with the legendary O’Jays during a one-of-kind concert Thursday at the Arie Crown Theater. As he performs all over the country and around the globe, Wilson shares his message on prostate cancer awareness. The former lead singer for the Gap Band hit rock bottom after the group, which included his brothers, disbanded. But since his comeback in 2005 with his hit solo album Charlie, Last Name Wilson, Wilson has been riding high. But as he watched is solo career soar, Wilson also learned that he had prostate cancer. He told the Defender shortly after finding out he had the disease that his early diagnosis and treatment saved his life. Wilson lit up the stage last summer opening for the 2009 Taste of Chicago. The O’Jays remain a venerable name in classic R&B. The group continues to pack venues nationwide.
