Nelson is an African American artist who became interested in the history and action of the Negro League Baseball. He began his project in 1996 and in Munster, created the book “We Are The Ship” that became a New York Times bestseller. His paintings authentically demonstrate the life of the Black sportsmen with oil on canvass. Depicted are Rube Foster, founder of the Negro League, Kansas City Dugout; Josh Gibson; and The East-West All-Stars Classic that was held often each summer in Chicago’s Comiskey Park, among others. The exhibit can be viewed Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
SANTA CLAUS ARRIVES IN CHICAGO at Daley Plaza Wednesday following the City of Chicago’s Official Christmas Tree lighting ceremony. The New Underwriters Laboratories Santa House will be located next to the giant yuletide tree. Santa’s visiting hours and house tours will begin Friday and continue Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 19 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. December 20-24 the house will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO, 111 S. Michigan, features Richard Hawkins: Third Mind continues through January 16 consisting of more than 80 objects in two spaces in Modern Wing’s Abbott Galleries and the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries. Hawkins’ productions explore two decades of collages as a primary focus of his expression.
GOODMAN THEATRE, 170 N. Dearborn, begins its annual "Christmas Carol Carol" directed by William Brown. The production continues through the Christmas season.
THE SILVER ROOM, 14442 N. Milwaukee, stages “Artically Linked” Nov. 30 with Rahmaan Statik, visual; Safia Jalila, actress/singer; DJ, newlife; and M’Reld Green, poet and writer.

RED ORCHID THEATRE, 1531 N. Wells, continues Steve Wilson’s direction of Craig Wright’s adaptation of Homer’s “The Iliad” through December 19 with an all-female cast consisting of Najwa Brown, Jaiden Falo-Sauter, Katie Jordan, Paola Lehman and others. Teens performing are between 12 and 15 years old. Tickets are $25-$30. Performance times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
COURT THEATRE at the University of Chicago, 5535 S. Ellis Ave. in Hyde Park, is staging Samm-Art Williams play “Home” directed by Ron OJ Parson through December 12. “Home” made its debut in 1981 by the Negro Ensemble and explores the experiences of African Americans during the 60s and 70s.
