CHICAGO (AP) — Health organizations want more Chicago residents getting tested for HIV and AIDS.
Nearly two dozen HIV and AIDS prevention organizations have joined forces to launch a prevention initiative geared toward reducing the number of new HIV infections by 25 percent.
The Chicago Department of Public Health reports that more than 20,000 people are living with HIV in the city, and the department estimates that 20 percent of people infected with HIV are unaware of their status.
Health officials say the prevention initiative will offer free testing services and prevention education resources. The campaign will also highlight health centers and hospitals that offer HIV testing as part of their regular health care offerings.
