PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland police officer who fatally shot an unarmed man in the back during a standoff last January has been placed on administrative leave pending a decision on review panel recommendations.
The Oregonian reported that police Chief Mike Reese has not indicated when he will make a final determination about Officer Ronald Frashour, who shot 25-year-old Aaron Campbell outside an apartment complex on Jan. 29.
Frashour, who is white, said he thought Campbell, who was black, was reaching toward his waistband for a weapon. The officer was not charged with criminal wrongdoing, although a grand jury harshly criticized Portland police.
The shooting also triggered a protest march on City Hall by black community leaders, and a visit by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who called it "an execution."
