Michael Sam is getting another shot to play pro football.
Just not in the NFL.
Sam will play in the CFL — the Canadian Football League.
The Former Missouri Tiger and SEC Conference Defensive Player of the Year doesn’t believe that he ever got a fair shot in the National Football League because he announced before the draft that he was gay. Sam was drafted in the 7th round by the St. Louis Rams, but was cut before the end of the season. He was then picked up by the Dallas Cowboys but was let go by them as well just a few weeks later.
Sam negotiated a two-year deal with the Montreal Alouettes on Friday, with Alouettes GM Jim Popp trumpeting the signing:
“With the signing of Michael Sam, we have become a better organization today. Not only have we added an outstanding football player, we have added even a better person that brings dignity, character, and heart to our team.”
Sam, who believes he is starting material for the NFL, but will roll with the CFL said, “I cannot wait to put on the pads, get back on the field and work hard each and every day with my teammates to bring a Grey Cup to the great fans here in Montreal.”
