Another weekend in Chicago delivers more deaths than we care to report. One death we all agree is one too many.
As a  teenage boy was walking east on the West 46th Street in the 1700 block he was  fatally shot  around 1:30 pm Sunday  by an assault rifle, a “high-powered semi-automatic weapon,” when a light-colored four door Saturn pulled up alongside him as he attempted to run and fired shots. The shooting took place in the Back of the Yards neighborhood according to police.
The 17-year-old did not have any identification on him so it is known who he is just yet.
In Woodlawn neighborhood  another  fatal shooting took place taking the life of  a 3-year-old boy.
If  a point is to be made let it be that once more  a weapon of war was used kill a young life taken too soon.
Police are investigating whether the gun, which is “possibly an AK-47,’’ has been used in any other shootings,Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
“It’s certainly unusual,’’ Guglielmi said of the assault weapon. “This is not the typical weapon used in a lot of shootings.”
A community event had ended shortly before the attack occurred, but it’s not certain  whether the 17-year old boy was coming from the   event or not.
There were at least two people  inside the four-door vehicle that is thought to be a Saturn crossover, from which the shots were fired “Someone inside fired “numerous rounds’’ and the boy was hit “multiple times,”  Guglielmi said.  The weapon was not recovered.
The victim never made it to the hospital and was pronounced dead on the scene, according to  Officer Michelle Tannehill, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.
No motive has been established.   The shooting is believed to be gang related.
Following the  shooting  community members gathered at the scene as officers were arriving  to  investigate.  Apparently  threats were made  towards the police feeding the need for an a greater than usual police response including a Special Operations Response Unit, according to Guglielmi.

“Threats were made that they would harm officers on the scene,” Guglielmi said.
Ironically the shooting happened about 20 feet from the front doors of Holy Cross Immaculate Heart of Mary about 10 minutes before church let out.
Outside, roughly 30 shell casings were splayed across West 46th Street, just outside of the large twin towers and pillared entrance of the Romanesque church.
Police are due to contact the Archdiocese of Chicago as well as Chicago Public Schools to ensure that students will be able to go to William H. Seward Communication Arts Academy Elementary School, less than a block away from the scene, on Monday.
Police stood at the perimeter of the crime scene, prepared for battle equipped with assault rifles guarding  children with youth soccer league jerseys dribbled a soccer ball across the cross walk.
Some of the youth wept, some embraced each other, some wept and embraced one another.
According to neighbors views,  two rival gang factions, La Raza and the Saints, have been fighting for years creating the disruptive  senseless recent shootings.
Gunfire was exchanged earlier during last week on Wednesday near 46th and Wood streets. There were no casualties.  Yet still another shooting also took place at 43rd Street and Marshfield Avenue on Tuesday, and there were no fatalities. It’s very probable that   they are all related based on the neighbors comments.
Finally another 3-year-old boy was shot in the right shoulder near the corner of East 61st Street and South Kimbark Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood around  6:15 p.m., police said.
The boy was in a car seat when an unknown offender fired shots at the car, police said. The boy was taken to University of Chicago Hospital, who was then transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
