Obama inauguration only the beginning

Barack Obama, who spent his professional life in Chicago, is now sitting in the Oval Office, the leader of the free world, and the best hope for those parts of the world who have not yet tasted freedom.

While we certainly embrace the historical significance of that reality, it is not enough to just place the events of Jan. 20, 2009 in a historical context.

That is because Jan. 20, 2009 is not the culmination of events, the end of a process, or the realization of a dream. Jan. 20, 2009 is the beginning. It is the beginning of the presidential term of Barack Obama, and it is the beginning of a new atmosphere, a new era for the United States.

Now that Obama has gathered you all around him, now that he has summoned you, now that he has your attention, America must get to work.

Surely, we have to eradicate the stain of the past eight years, where cowboy diplomacy was content to shoot first and ask questions later. America’s standing throughout the world sank to new lows, because the government, the presidency, could not be trusted to tell the truth to its allies or to its people. We lost credibility at home because it became obvious that the interests being served were not those of the people but instead of greedy financiers, bloated oil companies and rapacious mortgage lenders.
