Detective Allan Reddins, 40, of Chicago was killed in the line of duty on Friday morning.
Reddins responded to reports of an armed individual near the 1000 block of Lake Street around 9:30 a.m. As he and other officers approached, the suspect brandished a gun in the 800 block of Lake.
Shots were fired, and Reddins was struck on his left side. He was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries at 10:10 a.m.

The suspect, who was shot in the leg during the exchange, was taken into custody and is being treated at Loyola. His condition is stable, police said. Authorities cordoned off the area for investigation.
Reddins, a five-year veteran of the Oak Park Police Department, was sworn in as an officer in May 2019. Chief Shatonya Johnson described him as a “family man” and a talented officer she personally hired and later promoted.
Reddins leaves behind a 19-year-old son. The Oak Park Police Department had not faced a line-of-duty loss since 1938.
Witnesses recalled seeing Reddins approach the suspect near the Chase bank.
An Oak Park ambulance transported Reddins’ body from he hospital to the medical examiner’s office in a somber procession—a sight unfamiliar to the department and the community it serves.
The Village of Oak Park released a statement expressing deep condolences to Reddins’ family, friends and members of the law enforcement community.
“The Village of Oak Park extends its deepest condolences to Detective Reddins’ family, friends and colleagues within the Oak Park Police Department and the wider law enforcement community as they process the grief caused by this senseless act of violence,” The Village of Oak Park said in a published statement on its website.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker also released a statement in response: “Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins lost his life in the line of duty while protecting his community today. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and the entire Oak Park Police Department as we grieve the loss of a dedicated officer. May his memory be a blessing.”
Mayor Brandon Johnson also stated, “The City of Chicago would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues at the Oak Park Police Department for the tragic loss of Police Detective Allan Reddins who was killed in the line of duty today.”
The Chicago Police Statement issued this statement: “The Chicago Police Department extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Oak Park Police Department Detective Allan Reddins who was shot and killed in the line of duty today. We will continue to assist and support our neighboring department through this difficult time.”
