North Side community in fear after third woman sexually assaulted

Black women living on the North Side said they are fearful now that Chicago police have identified a serial rapist in the Logan Square community.

Black women living on the North Side said they are fearful now that Chicago police have identified a serial rapist in the Logan Square community. According to police, the latest incident occurred Wednesday afternoon near the 2100 block of North Maplewood Avenue when a woman was attacked walking home from a Blue Line train station. The woman said a man armed with a knife grabbed her and forced her into a hidden area where he sexually assaulted her. Chicago police said they believe that the same man raped two other women in the area based on descriptions given by the victims and the attack patterns. Another attack occurred Feb. 5 in the 2300 block of West Moffat Street and another one took place Sept. 26 in the 1700 block of North Marshfield Avenue. Mary Roberson, 34, lives in the Bucktown community on the North Side and said she is afraid because she takes public transportation and does not get home from work until 8 p.m.––when it is dark. “That’s bad for me because I am single, and when I get home, it is dark,” she said. “I am buying me some pepper spray and a switch blade so I dare some mugger to come my way.” Chicago police urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to call the Grand Central police station at 312-746-8282. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
