Last night the cast, director and creators stepped out for the Chicago red carpet premiere of the new BET+ film, North of the 10. About 150 fans and supporters gathered at the ShowPlace ICON Theater to see and meet the cast, enjoy complimentary concessions, and view the advance screening of the film.
From the creative lens of Chicago’s own Rhyan Lamarr, the film follows five guys as they collectively navigate life while balancing the highs and lows of their careers, friendship, and love interest. With the rise in women-centered sitcoms and dramas such as Insecure, Tyler Perry’s Sistas, and Harlem, “there’s an awesome renaissance and birth of stories about Black comradery and Black female friendship and we need the male equivalent,” said Tosin Morohunfola (plays Levon Rooker).
North of the 10 presents the narrative of Black men being able “to be empowered by community and trusting each other, and knowing that it’s okay to express love to one another,” said Tosin. “This movie is a statement about Black brotherhood… and taking care of each other”
Starring Don Benjamin, Tosin Morohunfola, DeStorm Power, Matt Rife, and Wes “Wuz Good” Armstrong, this bromance-comedy is set in 2008 Chicago, following each of their characters as they overcome various setbacks while figuring out how to channel their talents and level up. After seeing the movie Don “wants people to leave feeling inspired to do something and chase their dreams and have some joy in their heart…It’s been such a dark cloud on the world that we want this move to bring some joy to people.”
The film also features appearances by some prominent local Chicago talent, including LaRoyce Hawkins (Chicago PD), Bart Fitzpatrick (The Chi), Kendra G (WGCI-FM), Val Warner, and Ryan Chiaverini (Windy City Live).
