As a student at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, Nia Foney has excelled academically throughout her high school career.
As a student at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, Nia Foney has excelled academically throughout her high school career. Foney, who will be a senior in the upcoming school year, has taken on an intense curriculum of honors and advanced placement courses and school officials say she has done a “remarkable job” handling the load. She was inducted into the National Honor Society in her junior year and ended the year with a 4.69 cumulative GPA and scored a composite score of 29 on the ACT. Nia aspires to attend an Ivy League University, continue on to medical school and become a pediatrician – which has been her dream since the 5th grade. Aside from her numerous academic accomplishments, Foney participates in advanced mixed chorus and is apart of the pom-pom squad. She is also into community involvement, serving throughout the school year as a volunteer at Rush University Medical Center, is an active member in the Dreams for Kids organization and is a mathematics tutor at her church. “As I enter higher learning, I realize how important education is at the lower level and when I tutor at my church, I am hoping to inspire a child to have as much a love for math as I do,” Foney said. This past year, she was also chosen to be president of the Peer Leadership club and a leader of the Freshman Mentor organization at Whitney Young. She has always strived to achieve academic excellence, school officials and family members say. From crying when she received her first B in the 6th grade to stressing over her A.P. biology course her junior year, Foney has never been able to settle for less than the best and owes much of her ways to her mother who has instilled in her the value of education.
