New West Side Chicago high school set to open

When school starts Sept. 8 for Chicago Public Schools, the North Lawndale community on the West Side will have a new high school.

When school starts Sept. 8 for Chicago Public Schools, the North Lawndale community on the West Side will have a new high school. CPS is expanding Roswell Mason Mathematics and Science Academy, 1830 S. Keeler, and renaming it Roswell Mason Community Links High School, which will cover grades pre-K-9 this year, and each year will add a grade until it reaches 12th grade, according to Tonya Tolbert, principal of Roswell. The freshmen class will have 35 students this year. The expansion came about in part to allow for smaller classrooms (16 students per class). And no outside students will be allowed to transfer into the high school portion because one goal for the school is to have its high school students all graduate from eighth grade together. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
