New program targets violent criminals in Detroit

A push is on to take violent criminals off the streets of Detroit.

DETROIT (AP) — A push is on to take violent criminals off the streets of Detroit. Detroit police are launching the Comprehensive Violence Reduction Partnership to urge the use of federal prosecution in northwest Detroit and other crime-ridden areas. Police say the three-month program aims to reduce shootings, armed robberies and home invasions. Several local, state and federal agencies are collaborating with Detroit police on the project, which is to be announced at a news conference Thursday afternoon. Police say homicides in Detroit dropped by more than 50 in the first half of this year, and there were 130 fewer nonfatal shootings. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
