CHICAGO (AP) – A law school professor says Chicago’s decision to publicly release information about police misconduct investigations will shine a light on a department long dogged by a reputation for brutality and a code of silence.
Craig Futterman of the University of Chicago was involved in the litigation that ultimately prompted the city to give up its legal fight to keep the records secret.
Futterman says the new policy will force the department to investigate patterns of abuse. That’s because the policy requires the release of information on incidents and information about the number of times individual officers have been accused of misconduct.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel has said the new policy will help foster trust between the community and its police force.
