National Teacher’s Academy’s football team won the Academy for Urban School Leadership football championship Nov. 20 by defeating the three-time defending champion Dodge Academy 21-0.

The victorious Eagles, in their first year of competition in the AUSL football program, finished with a 7-2 record. Games were held every Saturday from Sept. 27 to Nov. 15 at Marquette Park and the Chicago Academy.

Five coaches led 17 student-athletes through daily, three-hour practices.

The Academy for Urban School Leadership is a nonprofit teacher preparation and school management organization working in partnership with Chicago Public Schools to turn around Chicago’s most underperforming schools.

AUSL’s mission is to improve student achievement in Chicago’s highpoverty, chronically failing schools through a disciplined transformation process, built on a foundation of specially trained AUSL teachers.

As of the 2008-09 school year, AUSL is managing 11 CPS elementary and high schools serving over 6,500 students and has graduated 240 teachers from its Urban Teacher Residency training program, many of whom teach in AUSL-managed schools.
