WINDHOEK, Namibia — The Namibian president says he has suspended his military chief over allegations of corruption. President Hifikepunye Pohamba did not refer to a probe into whether China’s Nuctec company paid kickbacks to Namibian officials, saying only that "serious allegations of irregularities" led him to suspend Lt. Gen. Martin Shalli. Nuctec was trying to land a lucrative contract to supply Namibia with security scanners. At the time, it was headed by the son of China’s president, Hu Haifeng. Hu has since left Nuctec. Albert Kawana, the minister of presidential affairs, said Thursday that Shalli’s suspension would "facilitate an unhindered investigation." Kawana would not comment on whether the case was linked to the Chinese investigation.
