“Moving Forward Together” To Launch Far South Quality of Life Plan

The Far South Chicago Coalition (FSCC), local business owners, community leaders, activists, organizers and sponsors will host the 2021 fundraising event, “Moving Forward Together,” on Saturday, November 20, to raise funds for the Quality-Of-Life Plan (QLP) for the South Side of Chicago, led by the Far FSCC. The coalition is composed of caring community leaders, business owners and engaged residents working together to create a thriving community that will exemplify the gold standard of Chicago neighborhoods. The event will feature guest speakers, lunch, entertainment and will celebrate the progress made and announce plans for the future. The event will take place 1 – 4 p.m. at Harborside International Golf Center located at 11001 South Doty Avenue East.

“The coalition came together because we saw a need in our community, a community that is full of opportunity, and we believe that working together will help our community to thrive,” said Joyce Chapman, FSCC President, Organizer and South Side Resident. “Our hope is that the community continues to do what they do best—come together to enhance the quality of life for the residents of the Far South Chicago Coalition community.”

QLPs are comprehensive visions focused on issues identified and chosen by local stakeholders after extensive community engagement and assessment of local assets specific to the community. Each plan is supported by a neighborhood-based convening agency that leads the planning process and typically continues the convening role into implementation.

Since January 2020, the FSCC has been addressing three key areas: Barriers, Strategic Planning and Vision. The efforts are led by the Advisory Committee, 95% of whose members live in the community, and are focused on the following equities in the South Side community: Economic Development, Education, Faith Based, Green Technology, Housing, Marketing & Engagement, Social Justice, Tourism & Transportation and Workforce Development. These are the key focus areas as the coalition moves forward with creating the QLP and partnership with LISC Chicago.

The fundraiser luncheon will kick off a series of efforts—both in-person and virtual—to engage the community by partnering with local organizations and businesses for events, surveys and meetings across the South Side of Chicago.

The event will feature special guests including:

  • Joyce Chapman, FSCC President, Organizer and Resident
  • Tina Sanders, Phalanx Family Services CEO-Convening Agency for the Far South QLP
  • Terrhonda Hudson, Housing Chair and Resident
  • Antoine D-Ice Dobine, Hands Around the Hundreds Founder
  • Lauren Lewis, LISC Chicago Program Officer

Communities that will benefit from the Far South QLP include Roseland, Altgeld Gardens, Calumet Heights, Cottage Grove Heights, Fernwood, Golden Gates, London Towne, Morgan Park, Pullman, Roseland Heights and West Pullman.

“LISC is honored to support the Far South QLP and help support neighborhood planning that builds local capacity for strong relationships, collaborative decision-making and action among community stakeholders to drive equitable change and investment into the neighborhood,” said Lauren Lewis, Program Officer for LISC Chicago. “We can accomplish this in our community through infrastructure, planning and togetherness.”
