Movement to restore Chicago grade school recess

A movement is underway to bring back recess to all of Chicago’s elementary schools.

CHICAGO (AP) — A movement is underway to bring back recess to all of Chicago’s elementary schools. Lynn Morton says in the five years she has led the effort no one has come forward to oppose it. She says parents, principals, teachers and lawmakers agree the city’s youngest students need time during the school day to play, exercise and socialize. Morton and fellow parents have lobbied principals, Chicago Public Schools officials and legislators for the restoration of recess. The campaign mirrors National PTA efforts. Morton says bills requiring daily recess have passed the Illinois House but failed to go any further. CPS spokesman Frank Shuftan tells the Chicago Tribune 37 percent of the city’s elementary schools have recess. He says a state mandate raises questions of time, scheduling, supervision and safety.
