After surrendering an uncharacteristic 45 points in a disappointing loss to Simeon, Morgan Park head coach Lexie Spurlock had a few changes designed for his defense unit for the Prairie State conference showdown with Hubbard.

Those changes worked out well as the Mustangs rolled to a 32-19 victory over the Greyhounds Saturday at Gately Stadium.

The Morgan Park victory created a three-way tie for first place in the Prairie State Conference. The Mustangs, Hubbard and Simeon are all 3-1 in the conference heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

While there were some defensive changes posted on the Morgan Park blackboard in the team locker room, the biggest change for the Mustangs was within themselves.

“We had a change in attitude,” Spurlock said. “We know we have a better defense than the one that gave up 45 points to Simeon. We knew we could play much better than that.”

While the Mustangs defense got the job done, the offense got an excellent performance from quarterback DeRon Brown who rushed for 118 yards and four touchdowns.

Brown knew he had to take over when Mustangs running back Dominique Bell left the game with an injury.

“With Dominique leaving the game, I knew I had to step it up and have a good game,” Brown said.

In Catholic League Green Conference play, Leo rolled to a 42-12 victory over Hales Franciscan at Gately Stadium Sunday.

Leading the way for Leo, running back Robert Morgan rushed for 247 yards and six touchdowns.

The win improved Leo to 5-2 while Hales Franciscan dropped to 1-6.

“Robert is a great running back,” Leo head coach Michael Holmes said. “He’s capable of having big games like this every week.”

The Public League regular season comes to an end this weekend with several key games scheduled.

In the Prairie State conference, Morgan Park battles Julian, Simeon takes on CVS and Hubbard collides with Dunbar.

In Heartland Conference play, Brooks takes on Phillips, Harlan faces Clark and Crane meets Manley.

In the Land of Lincoln conference, Marshall buses to Robeson, Corliss tangles with Harper and Fenger bangs helmets with King.
