Chicago police collected about 100 more firearms Saturday, compared to last June’s efforts, during the department’s fourth Gun Turn-In program.
Residents turned in 6,800 guns, no questions asked, including a sawed-off shotgun and an AK-47 assault rifle, according to a preliminary report from the Chicago Police Department.
At 25 locations throughout the city Saturday, participants received $100 Mastercard gift cards in exchange for each weapon turned over to the police. For those who relinquished a replica gun, they received a $10 gift card.
Last year, a total of 6,705 guns were turned in, and since 2006, at least 11,000 illegal guns were handed over at the events, police said.
