Select members of Chicago clergy have joined with friends of well-known award-winning African American writer/reporter and WVON radio talk-show host, Chinta Strausberg, to produce an afternoon and evening of honor and tribute to “the career professional who is always on the cutting edge of 21st Century journalism,” so says Josephine “Mother” Wade, long-time proprietor of Hardtime Josephine’s Cookin,’ the popular high-end Chatham eatery at 436 E. 79th St. (near Eberhart Ave.), where the affair will be held on Monday, 12 p.m. – 7 p.m.
“Chinta continues to devote her efforts to get the correct information to her reading and listening audiences,” adds Wade. “And she always maintain her self-esteem, dignity and character while never wavering on getting her stories accurate. We’re inviting the community to stop by, chat, chew and roast Chinta with a wishing-well blessing.”

Hats Off – to the Chicago Chapter of atHHNational Women of Achievement Inc. for their sponsorship of an enlightening and educational day for their Youth Achievers’ Chapter. Achiever Verlane Franklin organized an outstanding outing for the young folk at the Museum of Science and Industry.
Achiever Monica Mu±oz Lewis, president of Chicago NWOAI, pointed out the Black Creativity leaders in energy to the youth. Chaperones, Achiever Helen Davis Gardner, M.D. and Charles Kelly, assisted with the tour and educational aspects of the informative museum exhibits.

March Monument – The Cliff Dwellers of Chicago and the Ida B. Wells Commemorative Art Committee co-host a fundraiser on March 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at The Cliff Dwellers Club, 200 S. Michigan Ave., to benefit the development of a monument to honor the life and accomplishments of Ida B. Wells, journalist, teacher, anti-lynching crusader, women’s rights activist and civil rights pioneer. The event is being underwritten in part by the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation.
World-renowned Chicago artist, Richard Hunt, was commissioned by IBWCAC to create the monument; he will be featured at the cocktail reception and will give an overview of his vision for the monument which will be located in Bronzeville where Wells lived, worked and raised a family from 1895-1931.
Once installed on the median strip on 37th and Langley, the monument will be donated by IBWCAC to the City of Chicago’s Public Art Collection. With its installation, Chicago joins the few U.S. cities that honor an African American woman through a monumental sculpture.
The event cost is $150 per person; $125 will go towards the cost of the monument and is tax deductible. The Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, a non-profit, is the fiscal agent for the project. Persons attending and supporting the project will be contributing to the initial $300,000 needed for the creation of the monument. To date, 10 percent of the funds have been raised. The goal is to complete the project in 2012 to coincide with the 150th birthday of Ida B. Wells who lived from 1862–1931. The Cliff Dwellers, founded in 1907, is a private club and functions as a non-profit for men and women either professionally engaged in, or who support the fine and/or performing arts.
IBWCAC is made up of representatives of former Ida B. Wells public housing resident leadership, UJIMA Inc., the office of Ald. Will Burns (4th), The Habitat Co., CHA, North Kenwood-Oakland Conservation Community Council, Oakwood Shores Development Team (Community Builders and Granite Development Corp.), Business and Professional People for the Public Interest (BPI), City of Chicago Dept. of Housing and Economic Development, Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture and Ida B. Wells’ family members.
