A Cook County judge declared a mistrial Sunday after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict about the 2006 murder of a 14-year-old Englewood girl.
Carail Weeks was charged with the March 3, 2006 killing of Starkesia Reed after she was struck in the face by a bullet that fired through her family’s front window in the 6700 block of South Honore Avenue.
Prosecutors said Weeks, 27, was firing at two drug dealers, who later identified him as the triggerman.
Public defenders said their client was home with relatives when the shots rang out.
Weeks owned the assault rifle used to kill Reed, but jurors, who deliberated for two days, could not agree on whether or not the 27-year-old man fired the fatal bullet, said a spokesperson for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office said.
“We will retry Carail Weeks,” said Tandra Simonton, a spokesperson for the State’s Attorney’s office.
