Pedestrians on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue bridge will see improvements after the city installs nonskid fiberglass decking and restores decorative handrails. The $3.5 million project will take six months and begin in January. It means the closure of one side of the bridge and then the other while work proceeds. Department of Transportation spokesman Brian Steele says winter is a good time to do the work because fewer pedestrians use the bridge. The original 1920s-era railing’s interlaced diamond pattern will be recreated. But the latticework will have smaller gaps to conform with modern building codes.
