So far, the coronavirus has hit 1,600 people with a mounting death toll in the state of Illinois. With more facilities being needed, Mayor Lightfoot’s administration is aligning with hotels and the YMCA to provide more space for overcrowded hospitals.
“By working in tandem with healthcare experts and local organizations to increase capacity for those affected, we have been able to develop innovative solutions to ensure every resident, regardless of status or where they live, can obtain the care and refuge needed to prevent the spread of this disease and keep every Chicagoan safe and secure,” Lightfoot urged.
MetroSouth was once the largest employer in south suburban Blue Island. The health facility closed in the fall of 2019 after several years of financial losses, including losses exceeding $8 million in 2018. Earlier this week, the MetroSouth Medical Center property was sold to Lockwood Development Partners, a New York real estate development firm.
