A new South Side Metra station set to open next summer will bear the name of a late African-American state legislator.
Metra’s Rock Island line, which serves the South Side and south suburbs, will call its depot at 35th and Federal the Lovana S. “Lou” Jones/Bronzeville Metra Station.
“I am pleased the Metra board agreed to honor my request in honor of my dear friend and political colleague Lou Jones. This decision is meaningful given the tremendous effort by Metra to provide the opportunity for minority businesses to participate in the economic benefits this new station will usher into Bronzeville,” Cong. Bobby Rush, D-1st, said.
Rush, who began the push for the Metra stop during his early years in Congress, put in a formal request to the board last month about naming the station after Jones.
“Lou,” as she was affectionately known, served for 20 years as the representative for the 26th Legislative District and was the assistant House majority leader. Jones died in 2006.
