Two men have been sentenced to a combined 140 years in prison for the gang-related shooting of a 13-year-old girl on a Chicago playground. Cook County Judge Nicholas Ford on Monday sentenced 27-year-old Mwenda Murithi to 55 years in prison and 20-year-old Tony Serrano to 85 years in the 2007 death of Schanna Gayden. Ford called the men’s behavior "cowardly" and "inexplicable." Prosecutors say Murithi ordered Serrano to open fire on rival gang members near a playground on the city’s West Side on June 27, 2007. Gayden, who was playing with a cousin nearby, was struck in the head and died the next day. Several witnesses identified Serrano as the shooter, and said they heard Murithi order him to start firing. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
