Pauline Usher-Lampkin, a former Chicago Public School teacher, banker, community organizer, and noted writer, lost her prolonged battle to cancer.
Mrs. Pauline Usher-Lampkin, director of the Science and Biology Department at the Gwendolyn Brooks Academy and the teachers’ representative for the Local School Council (LSC), was born Oct. 6, 1958. She died Sept. 8, 2016, at Little Company of Mary’s Hospital in Evergreen Park. She was 57. The family resided in the Beverly area of Chicago. A Chicago native who embraced challenges and embodied “a warrior’s spirit,” received her Bachelor’s Degree in marketing from Roosevelt University, and Master’s Degree in Secondary Education at St. Zavier University. She graduated with honors from both institutions. She was a teacher for more than 20 years after initially starting her career in banking and community organizing.

Mrs. Lampkin, who met her husband (Derrick Sr.) of 34 years while they were attending Harlan High School, participated in many neighborhood-improvement projects, including devoting a great deal of time as a founder and life member of the organization “For The Love of Writing” (FLOW).
In addition to her husband, Derrick Sr., she is survived by two sons, Derrick Jr. and Michael (Rachelle); a daughter, SydneDion; three sisters, Patricia (Robert) Holder of Minnesota; Lucille Freeman of Matteson, IL., and Roberta (Clinton Sr.) Fields of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee and Madora Louise Usher.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at the Bellevue Baptist Church, 10070 S. LEmerald Ave., followed by burial at the Mount Hope Cemetery, both in Chicago.
