A bus carrying the sister and other relatives of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. collided with a minivan after leaving the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, reports the Washington Post.
The incident occurred at 15th Street and Independence Avenue SW about 5:30 p.m., said Sgt. Paul Brooks, a U.S. Park Police spokesman.
Christine King Farris, her children and grandchildren, along with reality-TV personality Omarosa Manigault, were passengers on the bus when it slammed on brakes in a failed attempt to avoid the minivan, which recklessly ran a red light.
The King family had just left the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. The commemoration took place at the Lincoln Memorial — the same place where Dr. King gave his landmark “Normalcy, No More” speech, more commonly referred to as the “I Have a Dream” speech.
The driver of the bus was taken to a hospital for observation, but no other injuries were reported.
