No matter how far someone gets in life, their destiny always seems to find them. Well, this was the case for soul music artist and south suburban resident Kenya MJ.

Growing up, music was not Kenya McGuire Johnson’s first career choice.

“I actually went to school and I became a physical therapist. I always had music, but when I started working as a therapist I stopped,” the Denver native told the Defender.

The married mother of two walked away from music for 10 years to raise her family and returned to the music scene about three years ago.

“Honestly, when I initially decided to get back into music, I honestly just thought I would join a jazz ensemble, she said, then explained how her destiny had bigger plans in store for her.

Her first EP, “Starting Over,” in which Johnson worked with Grammy award-winning producer Maurice Johnson, was released in June 2010.

Johnson describes her music as “mainly eclectic soul, but it also has a mix of jazz” and gets many of her ideas from love.

“For me, writing music is easier when I’m talking about love. Self-love, relationship love, etc. Love is the heartbeat. It’s what we’re all here for. I think that inspires me,” she said.
