The Museum of Broadcast Communications (@MuseumTV) will host a discussion at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020 on the second installment of the Lifetime documentary series Surviving R. Kelly Part ll: The Reckoning.
Headlining the event are two journalists featured in the Lifetime documentary:
· Jim DeRogatis, the co-host of Sound Opinions on WBEZ, who along with his then Chicago Sun-Times colleagues broke the story in 2000 that R. Kelly allegedly sexually abused young girls. He wrote the book, “Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly” and is an associate professor at Columbia College Chicago. @JimDeRogatis
· Mary Mitchell, who as an award-winning columnist and editorial writer at the Chicago Sun-Times, was also part of the team that worked on the first R. Kelly stories, including a series of columns on the Black community’s response. She has written for almost three decades about race relations and discrimination, criminal and social justice issues and domestic violence. @MaryMitchellCST
Moderating the discussion will be:
· Maudlyne Ihejirika will moderate the discussion. She is the award-winning urban affairs reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times. She’s also president of the Chicago Journalists Association and the National Association of Black Journalists Chicago. @Maudlynei
“This is an important event about a very difficult subject,” said Susy Schultz, MBC’s executive director (@Susys). “But neither Lifetime, nor these dogged journalists shied away from it and neither will the museum. We are grateful to provide people a forum to discuss the story with the journalists who have been reporting on it for nearly 20 years.”
