Mayor wants better CTA reaction

CHICAGO (AP) _ Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is demanding the CTA do a better job reacting to emergencies after revealing nearly an hour passed before rescue personnel was called to help evacuate passengers on a disabled train.

Daley says CTA workers didn’t communicate with passengers, many of whom evacuated the train on their own long before firefighters were finally summoned to the Blue Line subway.

Daley’s criticism Monday was an about-face from last week when he praised the response of the CTA and the fire and police departments.

In the wake of Daley’s criticisms, CTA President Ron Huberman is promising changes, including retraining rail employees in emergency communications and equipping train operators with cell phones that work in subways. (AP)
