State Senator Mattie Hunter has served in the Illinois General Assembly since 2003. She holds a leadership position as Assistant Majority Leader, vice chairs the Senate’s Executive Appointments and Public Health committees, and is a member of several key Senate committees. Her career includes legislation to improve health care access and quality, including the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ Health and Human Services Pillar.
A former grassroots organizer, Hunter earned degrees in government and sociology and holds a Doctor of Humane Letters. She is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and prevention specialist, equipping her with the expertise to craft legislation addressing substance abuse and prevention. Working abroad, Hunter headed the Center for Health and Human Services in Johannesburg on behalf of Human Resources Development Institute, Inc. (HRDI).
Recognized for her work in the fields of health care, child welfare and education, Hunter co-chairs multiple task forces on health and safety and is an active member of numerous organizations.
