BALTIMORE — Maryland State Attorney for Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby descended upon the scene like a thunder clap. When she told the world that Freddie Gray’s arrest was illegal and charged six police officers with an assortment of felonies, including second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault, neglect and misconduct in office, she sent shockwaves across the country.

Let’s take a look at the new state attorney for Baltimore:

At 35, Marilyn Mosby is the youngest state prosecutor of any major city in the U.S.

Mosby’s husband is Baltimore City Councilman Nick Mosby. The two met will attending Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala.

Mosby grew up in the Dorchester section of Boston. After her undergraduate degree at Tuskegee, she procured her law degree from Boston University.

Mosby came from a family of police officers. Her mother and father, aunts and uncles and grandfather were, or are, police officers. Her grandfather was one of the first black police officers in the state of Massachusetts.

Mosby was general counsel for Liberty Mutual before being elected Maryland state attorney for Baltimore City.

Mosby decided to become a lawyer after her cousin was murdered on her front porch in Boston; he was mistaken for a drug dealer.

Mosby was 6 years old when she was entered into a desegregation program in the Boston area. Her experience there inspired her to study the Civil Rights Movement.

Mosby has only been on the job since January. She was elected in November 2014 and was known as a crime crusader.

Before Mosby was a state attorney, she was an assistant state attorney before leaving to work at Liberty Mutual, then coming back to take the state attorney role in winning an election over a veteran who outspent her.

Mosby is the mother of two girls.
