A Chicago man has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for kidnapping a 59-year-old woman and going for a joyride while the woman was locked in the trunk. Twenty-year-old Tyre Howard and an accomplice were convicted in June of aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking. The victim, Loretta Wheeler, was forced into the trunk of a car at gunpoint. Howard and 19-year-old Demarcus Dunn drove around for three hours, stopping periodically to demand the PIN number for her bank card. The two fled after a short police chase, but they were arrested a few days later. Before being sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Joseph Claps, Howard asked for mercy and apologized to Wheeler even as he downplayed his guilt. Dunn is scheduled to be sentenced August 25.
