CANTON, N.Y. — A 26-year-old upstate New York man has pleaded guilty in the torture and mutilation of another man. Harry Klages (KLAY’-jes) II ended his trial Tuesday in St. Lawrence County Court as lawyers prepared to pick a jury. He admitted to two counts of first-degree assault. He’ll be sentenced to 38 years in prison as part of a plea deal. Klages was ready to stand trial for attempted murder in the January 2008 attack on 51-year-old Andrew Lesperance (les-pur-AHNTS’). Klages was accused of slicing open his abdomen, mutilating his genitals and gouging his eyes. Lesperance survived. Prosecutors offered Klages a sentence of 18 years to life. He agreed to the deal because he feared prior felony convictions could lead to more prison time. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
