CHICAGO (AP) — A man who spent a week in an Illinois jail says he was denied his prescribed medications for HIV, even though he asked for them repeatedly. Arick Buckles of Chicago says officials at the Bureau County Jail in Princeton told him the drugs cost too much. ACLU attorney John Knight says it’s a common problem in jails and prisons, partly because of the high cost of HIV drugs. Buckles’ drugs cost more than $2,000 a month. Peoria-based Advanced Correctional Healthcare provides the Bureau County Jail’s medical services under a $35,000 annual contract. The company’s CEO, Dr. Norman Johnson, says HIV drugs are paid for by the county under the contract’s terms.
