Man charged in 3 murders put in protective custody

Authorities say a 27-year-old suburban Chicago man charged in the slayings of three young women has been placed in protective custody.

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say a 27-year-old suburban Chicago man charged in the slayings of three young women has been placed in protective custody. Prosecutors say 27-year-old Sonny Pierce told his lawyer he felt threatened by other inmates being held in Cook County Jail in Chicago. Attorney Nicholas Albukerk on Thursday asked a judge to place Pierce into protective custody while he’s being held without bail. Albukerk told the judge "people have been getting in his face." Pierce is charged in the strangling deaths of two 18-year-old women in 2009 after he allegedly met them on a telephone dating chat line. He’s charged with the slaying of a 17-year-old girl in 2010, whose body hasn’t been recovered. Prosecutors say DNA evidence and telephone records link Pierce to the 2009 slayings.
