Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan was part of a nationwide crackdown on mortgage rescue and loan modification fraud. Madigan filed four more lawsuits Wednesday to try to stop these schemes joining federal agencies, other state attorneys general and local district attorneys. The Chicago Democrat now has filed lawsuits against 28 mortgage rescue frauds and gotten $1.8 million in judgments for homeowners, according to her office. In Madigan’s latest lawsuits, she alleges companies charged struggling homeowners an upfront fee to help them renegotiate their loans but then failed to do any work. Madigan recently announced she would pass on running for either Illinois governor or U.S. senator to seek a third term as attorney general. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
