Macy’s Day of Music announces the 12th annual free music marathon featuring Ella Jenkins, “the first lady of children’s folk song.”
The event takes place September 27 at 2:30 p.m., in Buntrock Hall at Symphony Hall, 220 S. Michigan Ave.
Ella Jenkins has been entertaining children for many decades, here at Ravinia Festival, Symphony Center and other local venues, and around the world.
Jenkins returns to the city with her multicultural, interactive musical journey.
The John Work Chorale will perform at 6 p.m. in the Rotunda.
In 1961, director Delano O’Banion established the chorale along with a small group of vocalists who were Fisk University alumni and who also had the opportunity of touring with the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
Later in the evening, at 8:45 p.m., jazz legend Von Freeman will jam in Binmtock Hall. He has been a fixture on the local jazz scene for more than 45 years.
Freeman will offer a rousing set of hard bebop and ballads, demonstrating his individuality and style.
A number of the city’s cultural and community institutions will offer hands-on educational and interactive activities for the entire family, as part of this event.
The Art Institute of Chicago, The Children’s Museum, Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, Abrakadoodle, Natya Dance Theatre, Open Books, The Museum of Mexican Culture, The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and DanceWorks Chicago will all offer free programs, lectures or performances that day.
All Macy’s Day of Music programs are free, and no tickets are required.
