DETROIT (AP) — Basketball great Earl "The Pearl" Monroe is challenging restaurants across the country to make menu items more diabetes-friendly. To that end, the former New York Knicks and Baltimore Bullets star is coming to Detroit on Tuesday to sample such dishes with a local fan and a certified diabetes educator. The event is part of the Diabetes Restaurant Month campaign, for which Monroe is a spokesman. Monroe was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a dozen years ago and says his father also had the disease. He picked up the nickname "The Pearl" during a dazzling pro career in which he won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 1968, an NBA title with the Knicks in 1973 and membership in the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History club in 1996.
