GRANT PARK, Ill. — A longtime northeastern Illinois police chief has pleaded guilty to charges of taking bribes to drop cases against people accused of soliciting prostitutes. The U.S. Department of Justice says former Grant Park Police Chief Scott Fitts on Thursday entered his plea in an Urbana court. Officials say the 41-year-old acknowledged paying a woman $38,242 to pose as a prostitute and lure people into arrest by Fitts’ officers. They say Fitts offered to dismiss the cases of those arrested if they paid a "fine" that was typically $3,500. Authorities say most of the people arrested agreed to pay. The Department of Justice says the scheme resulted in profits of $400,719. Fitts had been Grant Park police chief since 1994 before being indicted last June. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
