PHILADELPHIA – A Pennsylvania judge has approved a settlement in a nearly 40-year-old desegregation lawsuit against the School District of Philadelphia.

Commonwealth Court Judge Doris Smith-Ribner approved the settlement Monday in the lawsuit brought by the state’s Human Relations Commission.

The commission sued in 1970 seeking to close the achievement gap between white and minority students. The agreement aims to raise the educational opportunities to students in “racially isolated” schools that are at least 90 percent Black or Latino.

The settlement seeks better pay for teachers and first crack at pilot programs for lowachieving schools.
