The 30 year-old R&B singer is unlike most singing sensations because it was not until age 25 that she truly realized what she wanted to do with her life.
“I have been singing since age 5, but it wasn’t until recently that I realized the gift God blessed me with and that’s singing,” CynSay told the Defender. “My mother played a big part in helping me realize what my calling is and how music has always played a vital role in my life.”
The youngest of three sisters, CynSay was born Cynthia Gilmore, which led her to create her stage name. Sensei (pronounced CynSay) means “master teacher” in Japanese. But before she embarked on a singing career she had already spent three years studying political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. And she attended Columbia College Chicago for a year studying music. She has yet to earn a bachelor’s degree but said that is among her long-term goals for herself.
For now she works as an assistant treasurer at a local credit union in part because, “I have always been good with numbers and working with people.”
And while she has yet to be signed to a record label, CynSay said she expects that to change soon.
“I have been talking a lot to Marshall Thompson who works closely with Joe Jackson (Michael Jackson’s father). Mr. Jackson recently formed a new record label and I am hoping to sign with him,” she said.
