CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois lawmakers have postponed questioning players in Gov. Pat Quinn’s now-defunct anti-violence program.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday that the Legislative Audit Commission voted 11-0 to comply with U.S. Attorney James Lewis’s request not to take testimony that might impede a criminal investigation of the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative.
Lewis assured the commission that he would not extend the 90-day respite he requested.
But that means the audit commission could begin questioning the seven witnesses it subpoenaed just weeks before Democrat Quinn faces voters in the November election.
Republicans contend Quinn used the $55 million program in 2010 to win votes from key Chicago-area districts. Quinn has repeatedly denied that.
The commission got involved after a state audit found poor program management and misused money.
