Lerone Bennett Jr.’s wife dies

Gloria Bennett, former associate editor at Johnson Publishing Inc. and wife of Ebony magazine’s Executive Editor Emeritus Lerone Bennett Jr., died Friday of complications from asthma. She was 78.

Gloria Bennett, former associate editor at Johnson Publishing Inc. and wife of Ebony magazine’s Executive Editor Emeritus Lerone Bennett Jr., died Friday of complications from asthma. She was 78.

Mrs. Bennett, a Mobile, Ala. native, received her journalism degree from Marquette University in 1953 and went to work for Jet magazine shortly thereafter. She met Lerone at the magazine, and they married three years later.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years; their four children, Joy (a senior editor at Ebony), Constance, Courtney and Lerone III; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Ailbe Catholic Church, 9051 S. Harper Ave.
