Leon Finney Jr., passes away at 82.

The Rev. Leon Finney Jr., community organizer, activist, and pastor of the Metropolitan Apostolic Community Church, passed away Friday, September 4, 2020. In the 1960s, Rev. Leon Finney joined the US Marine Corps, where he served as a police officer and criminal investigator. After his stint in the Marines, he became a community organizer with the Woodlawn Organization. He became the president of TWO in 1969. As an organizer, Finney worked to cite slumlords in the Woodlawn area. He worked tirelessly to help revitalize Southside neighborhoods, particularly with the Woodlawn Organization.

He served as vice-chairman of the Chicago Pubic Housing Association and the chairman of the Monitoring commission for school desegregation for CPS throughout his career. The recipient of three master’s degrees and two Ph.D.’s, Rev. Leon Finney pastored three churches before joining the Metropolitan Apostolic Community Church, where he remained pastor for 20 years.  Rev. Leon Finney will lie in state from three to 8 pm at Metropolitan Church, 41st and King Drive on Friday, September 25.
Funeral arrangements are scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2020, at Apostolic Faith Church, 3823 South Indiana. 8:30-1 pm with a private burial scheduled after.
