The 36th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced its 2021 nominees for induction. Included in the list of nominees are legendary recording artists Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, LL Cool J, and Fela Kuti.

Eligibility for nominations requires an artist or group to have released its first recording 25 years before the year of nomination. More than 1000 members of the music industry will vote through April 30. Fans can also vote at rockhall.com, comprising a “fans ballot” to be counted with the other ballots.

The 2021 nominees represent the most gender-inclusive ballot in history, with seven of the 16 nominees featuring women. This year’s ballot also represents the most racially diverse ballot since 1996, with nine of the 16 nominees representing people of color. Other nominees include Kate Bush, Devo, Foo Fighters, The Go-Go’s, Carole King, and Rage against the Machine. The musical diversity represented in this year’s list of nominees crosses various musical genres, from Soul, hip-hop, Grunge, new wave, punk, and heavy metal.

“This year’s ballot reflects the diversity and depth of the artists and music the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebrates; these Nominees have left an indelible impact on the sonic landscape of the world and influenced countless artists that have followed them”-Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Chairman, John Sykes.

If elected, Tina Turner will become a twice inductee. Chaka Khan was also previously nominated as a solo artist and with the band Rufus. Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Fela Kuti, and Dionne Warwick are first time nominees.

The 2021 inductees will be announced in May. The 2021 induction ceremony will take place this fall in Cleveland, Ohio.
